What is an SPF record?

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a TXT record at a domain’s root that begins with v=spf1. It lists the IP addresses and services that the domain owner authorises to send mail using that domain. Receiving mail servers can compare the sending server against that list.

Things worth knowing when you read the result

  • A domain should publish only one SPF record. Two v=spf1 records is a known error under the SPF specification (RFC 7208).
  • The specification limits an SPF check to 10 DNS lookups. Mechanisms such as include, a, mx and redirect count toward it. This checker expands include and redirect records and shows an observed lookup count, subject to DNS errors and safety caps.
  • The last mechanism is usually ~all (soft fail), -all (fail) or ?all (neutral). The qualifier tells receivers how to treat mail from servers not listed.

Common questions

Where is the SPF record stored?

As a TXT record on the domain itself, for example at example.com. It is the TXT value that starts with v=spf1.

Why does the checker show no SPF record?

Public DNS returned no TXT record starting with v=spf1 for that exact name. Check the spelling, and note that subdomains need their own record if they send mail.

Does this check the 10-lookup limit?

Yes. It expands include and redirect TXT records and shows where the observed count passes 10. DNS errors and safety caps can make the count incomplete.
